13 January 2022

A documentary-artistic film about the journey of Ibn Fadlan will be shot to the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria. The filming will take place at six locations, Kamil Samigullin, head of the republic's Religious Board of Muslims, Mufti of Tatarstan, said at an expanded meeting of the Republican Organizing Committee for the preparation and celebration of the jubilee year.

"Among the major initiatives is the documentary-artistic film "Ibn Fadlan." At present the film is at the stage of shooting mass episodes. Since the film is historical, <...> historians pay great attention to stage costumes and artistic design," said the mufti.

In addition to Kazan, shooting will also take place in Bukhara, Mashhad, St. Petersburg, the Astrakhan region and the Atninskiy district of Tatarstan. The Muslim TV channel Khuzur TV of the religious board of Muslims of Tatarstan is working on the film.

Samigullin also said that the republic's religious board is planning to release an updated Quran with the Kazan basma (print) design font. "This Tatar national script has been developed for the entire year 2021. It was created on the basis of a genuine, authentic typographic print and provides ample technical opportunities for modern book printing," he stressed.

According to historians, the ancestors of modern Tatars accepted Islam in 922 after the visit of the Arab traveler and secretary of the embassy of Abbasid caliph Ahmad Ibn Fadlan to Bulgar. Many historical monuments have been preserved in the Bulgar site, including the Khan Tomb, the Black Chamber, the Eastern Mausoleum and several ancient minarets.

Anniversary celebrations on the occasion of the 1,100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria are held at the state level. The preparations for them started in 2021. The decision on the celebration was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Based on it, an organizing committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin was created, and a federal plan of the main events was formed. According to the plan the main celebrations will take place in the Republic of Tatarstan.
