The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) moving towards Rafah in southern Gaza risks the lives of over a million Palestinians and threatens to disrupt humanitarian aid delivery, reports the Saudi newspaper Ash-Sharq al-Awsat. With approximately 1.5 million people seeking refuge in Rafah from Israeli bombardment, the IDF's advance could exacerbate an already dire situation.
According to the report, humanitarian workers and doctors in Rafah are struggling to provide essential medical care and prevent the spread of disease among the displaced population. Jan Egeland, Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, expressed grave concern over the potential consequences of a prolonged IDF ground operation, emphasizing that turning Rafah into a battleground would have catastrophic implications.
Egeland warned against allowing conflict to escalate in what he described as a "giant refugee camp," stressing that such actions could undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts and exacerbate the suffering of civilians already grappling with displacement and limited access to essential services.
