16 July 2020

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has resigned the Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov. The corresponding order was published on Thursday on the website of the head of state.

At a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday, Aliyev criticized the activities of the diplomatic service, noting that it was not effective enough, passive and had a defensive rather than offensive character.

Last week, special service of state security of the Republic held the Foreign Ministry's anti-corruption operation, in which  several high-ranking officials of the Foreign Ministry were arrested for taking bribes and misappropriation of public funds, in particular the heads of consular management and case management.

Jeykhun Bayramov was appointed the new Foreign Minister. "Appoint Jeykhun Aziz oglu Bayramov as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan," the relevant decree reads.

Bayramov, 47, has served as the Republic's Minister of Education since 2018. Mammadyarov, 60, has been head of the Foreign Ministry since April 2004.
