The sudden inspection of the troops of the Southern and Western military districts, the Marines of the Northern and Pacific fleets and individual formations of the Central subordination, as well as the Airborne troops (VDV) began on behalf of the Supreme Commander of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. This was announced on Friday by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
"In accordance with the decision of the Supreme commander-in-chief of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation, a sudden inspection of the troops of the Southern and Western military districts, individual units of the central command, airborne troops and Marines of the Northern and Pacific fleets is being conducted," Shoigu said during a meeting with the Department's senior staff at the National defense management center.
According to the Minister, the event is planned to assess the ability of the armed forces to ensure military security in the South-West of Russia, where serious threats of a terrorist nature remain, and to prepare for the strategic command and staff exercises "Caucasus-2020", which are planned in September.

"During the inspection, 56 tactical-level exercises are planned to be conducted with the troops. 35 polygons and training fields are being used, as well as 17 marine polygons in the Black and Caspian seas. In total, 149,755 people, 26,820 weapons and military equipment, 414 aircraft, 106 ships and support vessels were involved in the sudden check," Shoigu said.
"The results of the conducted training events should be taken into account in determining the assessment of the state of the level of training of associations, formations, and military units when they are admitted to the strategic exercise "Caucasus-2020", said the Russian Defense Minister.
