Incumbent Kyrgyz President Zhaparov Plans to Run for Second Term

30 January

Current President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov intends to stand for a second term in the upcoming presidential elections in the republic, as stated by the press secretary of the head of state, Askat Alagozov, to the Kyrgyz news agency AKIpress.

"Indeed, President Sadyr Zhaparov will seek a second term. This will be a logical progression, considering that a beginning has already been made, and long-term international projects of strategic significance are in the pipeline," Alagozov said.

Zhaparov secured victory in Kyrgyzstan's January 2021 presidential election and assumed office two and a half weeks later. His term of office concludes in three years.

Following amendments to Kyrgyz law, the next Kyrgyz president will serve a five-year term instead of a six-year term. Additionally, the same individual can now hold the position of president twice.

Earlier, Zhaparov's plan to run for a second term was revealed by the deputy head of the Cabinet of Ministers, Edil Baisalov.
