Indonesia Aims to Become a Full Member of BRICS

18 December

Indonesia, currently holding partner status with BRICS, seeks to join the organization as a full-fledged member. This intention was expressed by Indonesia's Ambassador to Russia, Jose Antonio Morato Tavares, during a conference at the Russian State University for the Humanities dedicated to the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia.

"We view the future of bilateral relations positively and look forward to more dynamic engagement with Russia. Indonesia is interested in joining BRICS as a full member. At present, we are a partner country and hope to become a full participant in the organization," he stated.

The ambassador also highlighted ongoing negotiations regarding the establishment of a free trade zone between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

"In 2023, over 161,000 Russian tourists visited Indonesia, and from January to October 2024, more than 144,000. We are also keen on increasing the number of Indonesian students studying abroad, including in Russia," he added.

BRICS was established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. As of January 1, 2024, the group expanded to include Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia.
