Indonesia arrests leader of the biggest South-east Asian terrorist group

A man believed to be the leader of the South-east Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiah has been arrested after a 16-year-long hunt.

 

 


A terrorist named Para Wijayanto was captured in Bekasi, the city within the Jakarta metropolitan area, The Straits Times reports, citing a police source.

 

 


From his house, weapons, books, and a video camera were seized. There are no other details of the arrest as of now.

 

 


The man has been on the police priority wanted list since 2003. He is suspected of taking part in several terrorist attacks, including the Bali bombings in 2002 that killed 202 people, of whom 164 were foreigners.

 

 


According to intelligence agencies, in 2008 Wijayanto led a group, which also operates in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
