The Indonesian authorities intend to introduce a special QR code for foreigners, which will allow them to control their movements around the country. According to The Jakarta Post on Thursday, the document was prepared by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights and submitted to President Joko Widodo for approval.

The head of the Immigration Department, Joni Ginting, said that "the system is being developed, among other things, to control foreigners who are illegally trying to hide in Indonesia." He explained that "a unique QR code will be pasted in the passport or put in visa, and then a tourist can be tracked the movement of foreign citizens anywhere, including when checking in at hotels, going to restaurants, shops, when buying tickets for intercity transport, and so on."

This initiative, as the official pointed out, was developed with the participation and assistance of several departments, including the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor General's office, and the Ministry of Labor.

Meanwhile, as noted in an interview with the publication, the head of the private agency Indonesia Cyber Security Forum Ardi Sutedja, "despite the fact that the QR code is used in identity cards for citizens of the Republic, many foreigners may fear for the safety of personal data and privacy violations, especially for tourists." Last year, the country was visited by 16.1 million tourists from abroad, about 2% more than a year earlier.
