Indonesia expects that its cooperation with Russia in military procurement will reduce its reliance on foreign equipment from other countries, Meutya Hafid, a deputy in Indonesia's Council of People's Representatives (lower house of parliament) said.
“The Indonesian Air Force currently operates Su-27 and Su-30 fighter jets. If Russia agrees to technology transfers, it will lessen our dependency on other nations for major weapons procurement,” Hafid told the ANTARA news agency. She also expressed support for President-elect Prabowo Subianto’s initiatives on enhancing defense cooperation with Russia, which she believes will help achieve greater independence for Indonesia’s defense industry in the future.
Hafid highlighted that Subianto’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow underscored Indonesia's independent foreign policy approach amidst a complex international landscape.
During his visit to Moscow on July 31, Subianto praised the proposed opening of a Russian consulate general in Bali and suggested that Aeroflot could begin flights between the two countries. The future Indonesian leader also explored opportunities for collaboration with the state corporation Rosatom.
