Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi announced that representatives from BRICS countries have extended an invitation for Indonesia to join the association, as reported by the Antara news agency.
"Right from its inception, BRICS has harbored the intention to expand its membership, prompting all BRICS foreign ministers to extend an invitation to Indonesia," the minister stated, as quoted by the agency. Nevertheless, she clarified that assessments are currently being conducted to evaluate the advantages of becoming a part of the association. "To become a member of BRICS, a country is required to submit a letter expressing its interest. It's akin to a letter indicating our interest in joining BRICS and so forth. As of now, Indonesia has yet to submit this letter," Marsudi underscored.
Simultaneously, she emphasized that Jakarta maintains favorable relations with all member nations of the association.
The 15th BRICS summit took place from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg under the leadership of South Africa. Reports from the Indian newspaper Business Standard suggested that Indonesia might have been considered for membership in the association. However, subsequent information revealed that starting from January 1, 2024, the BRICS bloc will welcome new members, including Argentina, Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia.
