Indonesian President says the country is not going to impose sanctions against Russia

09 March 2022

Indonesia is not going to impose sanctions against Russia because of the situation around Ukraine and the Russian military operation, President Joko Widodo said in an interview published Wednesday in the Nikkei newspaper.

"Sanctions are not the best solution and citizens will be sacrificed," he said. At the same time, Widodo expressed concern about what is happening in Ukraine. "It is important for all countries to work toward reducing tensions, de-escalating, intensifying negotiations. This is very important. Negotiations, a cease-fire, then a cessation of war," the Indonesian president said.

Widodo also called both Russia and Ukraine friends of Indonesia.
