Interim President of Mali Assimi Goita intends to attend the second Russia-Africa summit, Mali Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop said on Tuesday following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"I myself was on a visit to Moscow, we held talks with you. President [of Mali Assimi] Goita and President [of Russia] Vladimir Putin are in regular contact over the phone. I will also say that President Goita is happy to confirm his participation in the Russia-Africa summit to be held in St. Petersburg," he said.
According to Diop, Mali's participation in the summit will give a new dynamic to bilateral relations. "Mr. Minister, in order to strengthen our political dialogue, we need to focus on our interests, we must always think about this, in the context of relations. We will continue to make our efforts in order to ensure the security of Mali and we will do everything in order to move to the sustainable stability of our country, we will modernize our political institutions," said the head of the Malian foreign ministry.
Diop expressed gratitude to Russia for its assistance. "We will work together on security or other issues, all in line with international norms and international law," he added.
As Roscongress previously reported, the second Russia-Africa summit and economic forum is scheduled for July 26-29 in St. Petersburg. The first event was held October 22-24, 2019, in Sochi under the slogan "For Peace, Security and Development."
