Iran Accuses UN of Double Standards on Women's Rights Protection

14 March

Iran's Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, Ensiyeh Khazali, has accused the United Nations of operating under double standards in the protection of women's rights. This assertion was made during an interview with the American magazine Newsweek, where Khazali compared the situation with the observance of women's rights in Iran and Israel.

Khazali emphasized that Iran respects and protects women's rights, highlighting the country's support programs for women who fled Afghanistan, providing them with medical and educational assistance. She noted the "chaos and hype" in the world media following the death of a girl in September 2022, which led to unrest in Iran. Khazali criticized the Iranian exclusion from the UN Commission on the Status of Women, attributing it to "lies and gossip."

Contrasting this with the situation in the Gaza Strip, where more than 22,000 women and children have been killed in the last five months, Khazali questioned the UN's double standards. She demanded Israel's expulsion from the UN Commission on the Status of Women, arguing that the world expects the regime responsible for the homelessness, violence, and murder of millions of women and children for decades to have no place on the commission.

The unrest in Iran began on September 16, 2022, following the funeral of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died under mysterious circumstances. The official version states that Amini was detained by police for improperly wearing a headscarf and suffered a heart attack. However, social media circulated reports that Amini was beaten by police. The Iranian Forensic Medicine Organization later published an official report stating that Amini was not injured.
