Iran Accuses US of Civilian Casualties in Syria and Iraq Strikes

07 February

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has penned a letter to the President of the UN Security Council, denouncing the United States for allegedly conducting targeted airstrikes against civilians and critical infrastructure in Syria and Iraq.

The letter, as reported by Mehr News Agency, decries the military engagements executed by the US on February 2, 2024, stating, "<...> Iran vehemently condemns the military operations conducted by the United States on the territories of Iraq and Syria. These unlawful actions were aimed at civilians and essential infrastructure, resulting in a significant number of civilian casualties <...>."

Contrastingly, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has provided a different account of events. On the evening of February 3, 2024, U.S. aircraft launched strikes against over 85 targets, which included positions held by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps' Al-Quds Special Forces and related factions in various border regions of Iraq and Syria. These strikes were retaliatory measures following an assault on a Western coalition military installation near Al-Tanf, on the Syrian-Jordanian border, which resulted in the death of three US service members and injuries to 40 others. The US and NATO assert that the perpetrators of this attack are Shiite militant groups supported by Iran.
