Iran Advocates for Peaceful Dialogue in Transcaucasia, Urges Resolution of Tensions through Diplomacy

05 October 2023

Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amir Abdollahian conveyed his belief that the language of peace should ultimately triumph over the language of tension and conflict in the Transcaucasian region during a meeting with Khalaf Khalafov, Azerbaijan President's Representative for Special Assignments.

"The reestablishment of Azerbaijani control over the Nagorno-Karabakh region necessitates the initiation of a fresh chapter in regional collaboration, focused on fostering peace and advancing economic development in the Caucasus. We firmly hold the view that, going forward, the language of peace must take precedence in the region over the language of conflict and tension," expressed Abdollahian, as cited on the official Iranian Foreign Ministry's social media account on platform X (formerly Twitter).

The foreign minister also conveyed Iran's eagerness to enhance its bilateral relations with Azerbaijan across all sectors.

In response, Khalafov acknowledged the substantial advancements in relations between Tehran and Baku. He underscored that safeguarding the rights and freedoms of Armenian residents in Karabakh remains a priority for Azerbaijani authorities.

Khalafov arrived in Tehran on the evening of October 3. During his visit to Iran, he held meetings with President of the Islamic Republic Ebrahim Raisi, and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadiyan.
