Iran calls for destruction of US chemical weapons

28 June 2019

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called the USA for destruction of its chemical weapons arsenal.

"Iran, once more, emphasizes its principal policy of condemning the use of chemical weapons anywhere, anytime and under any circumstances", said Zarif in his message on the National Day of campaign against chemical and biological weapons in Iran.

He added that the main step toward having a world free of weapons of mass destruction is "to completely destroy the chemical weapons arsenal of the US as the only owner of such weapons in the world."

The UN General Assembly approved The Chemical Weapons Convention on 30 November 1992. As of now, 192 states have signed this Convention. Of the four United Nations member states that are not parties to the treaty, Israel has signed but not ratified the treaty, while Egypt, North Korea, and South Sudan have neither signed nor acceded to the Convention.
