Iran expanded sanctions against EU

Iran has added 12 individuals and 8 legal entities involved with the European Union to its sanctions list in response to its [the EU] restrictive measures against the Islamic Republic, the Iranian MFA reported on Wednesday.


The sanctions list, along with other organizations, includes the Persian editorial boards of the Deutsche Welle German media company  (recognized in Russia as a media-foreign agent) and the French radio station Radio France internationale.


In addition, the Islamic republic imposed sanctions against the editors-in-chief of the German newspaper Bild, Johannes Boi and Alexandra Wurzbach, as well as against several members of the European Parliament and the former mayor of the 1st arrondissement of Paris.


According to the statement of the Iranian MFA, these individuals and organizations are accused of "carrying out activities that have led to riots, violence and terrorist acts against the Iranian people."


On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani said his office planned to publish on Wednesday an expanded sanctions list against individuals and structures of the European Union. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian also reported on the preparation of a new list of sanctions. However, he pointed out that a final decision could be taken in a few days.


Sanctions lists of the parties


On October 17, the EU imposed sanctions against 11 Iranian individuals and four entities responsible, according to the association, for the alleged repression in the country. The blacklist included, among others, the Iranian morality police, its head, as well as other security officials, the Basij militia, and the cybersecurity command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, an elite unit of the Iranian Armed Forces).


On October 19, Tehran retaliated by adding more than a dozen individuals and organizations from Europe to its sanctions list. This included the Government Communications Center (GCHQ), a British electronic intelligence service, the BBC Farsi and Iran International TV channels, as well as Tom Tugendhat, Deputy Head of the British Interior Ministry.


On October 20, the EU imposed sanctions against Shahed Aviation Industries, the manufacturer of Iranian drones, and three generals of the Islamic Republic. The Official Journal of the EU claimed that they were allegedly connected with deliveries of drones to Russia. On the same day, Britain imposed similar sanctions.
