Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani expressed gratitude to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his appeal to the President of the Security Council regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip.
"It is essential to express gratitude to the UN secretary-general, who drew the Security Council's attention by invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter and called for immediate action to uphold international peace and security," he stated, as quoted by the Tasnim news agency. "Regrettably, we have witnessed the unfortunate actions of the US, vetoing the resolution and dismissing the international community's plea to halt this bloody war and barbaric attack by Israel on the Gaza Strip," added the foreign ministry spokesman.
Earlier, Guterres emphasized the necessity of a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to "restore the means of survival and ensure the safe and timely delivery of aid." For the first time during his tenure as secretary-general, Guterres utilized Article 99 of the UN Charter, sending a letter to the president of the Security Council. This article grants the secretary-general "the right to bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter that, in his opinion, may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security."
