Senior officials from Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Qatar may convene to discuss the Syrian crisis during the Doha Forum on December 7–8, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
“There is a likelihood of a meeting next week in Doha with the participation of Qatar, Iran, Turkey, and Russia to deliberate on the situation in Syria,” Araghchi stated, as quoted by Al Jazeera. Iranian news agency Fars added that the discussion might occur on the sidelines of the forum and involve foreign ministers.
On December 2, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also mentioned plans to revive the Astana process. He announced that Turkey, Russia, and Iran are preparing to meet at the ministerial level soon to address the Syrian crisis. “This was one of the subjects I discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov,” Fidan noted.
Syria has been mired in conflict since 2011. The Astana talks, established in 2017, have served as a platform for resolving the crisis, with 21 rounds held to date. The Astana format includes Russia, Iran, and Turkey as guarantor states, alongside Syrian government and opposition representatives, the United Nations, and observer nations such as Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq.
