Iran holds parliamentary elections

21 February 2020

Today, parliamentary elections are being held in Iran. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Islamic Republic, polling stations opened across the country at 8:00 a.m. local time (07:30 MSK).

More than 7 thousand people will compete for 290 seats. Candidatures were approved by the Constitution Protection Council, which considered applicants for compliance with the standards.

Initially, more than 15 thousand people ran for participation in the elections; however, some of them withdrew their applications, many others were not confirmed by the Council.

As a result, less than half of the initial numbers of applicants remained.

It is noted that the elections are held in a difficult environment for Iran due to US economic pressure.

Now the parliamentary majority consists of reformists supporting President Hassan Rouhani’s policy. Conservatives are opposed to the course of government. According to political scientists, the majority of votes in parliament can be given to them (conservatives) in these elections.
