Iran is ready for prisoner exchange with US outside nuclear deal

17 August 2022

Tehran is ready for a prisoner exchange agreement with Washington that will not affect the negotiation process of the nuclear deal, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said on Wednesday.

"Iran separately from the nuclear deal has repeatedly announced to the US through various channels that it is ready to resolve the issue of prisoners," the department's press office quoted him as saying. - "It is surprising that the US side, instead of lifting restrictions in this area, works exclusively on propaganda against the Islamic republic."

Islamic Republic's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on February 19 that Tehran did not want to link the issue of prisoner exchange with the US nuclear deal, but Washington was interested in the opposite. According to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri, US authorities are currently holding about 15 Iranian citizens accused of trying to circumvent US sanctions.
