Iran prepared a new proposal to resolve the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh

29 October 2020

Iran took the initiative to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, where the lead role will be given to the countries of the region. This was announced by Deputy Foreign Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Abbas Araghchi on his arrival in Moscow on Thursday.

“We accept responsibility and will help to resolve the conflict”, the diplomat wrote in the Telegram channel of the Iranian Embassy in the Russian Federation. He emphasized that the main purpose of Iran’s proposal is to put an end to this crisis. “The most important feature of Iran’s plan is its regional approach and another one is its realism”, the diplomat said.

“We proposed a regional approach to resolving this crisis involving the countries of the region that play a key role, and Russia is one of these important countries in the region”, he noted.

According to Deputy Minister, in the first phase, Iran’s plan “provides for the practical implementation of a number of principles by the countries of the region, such as ending the occupation, respect for territorial integrity, respect for sovereignty, the principle of inviolability of borders, respect for humanitarian and minority rights, preventing attacks on civilians and facilities”.

Efficiency of the Minsk group

The representative of Iran also said that the OSCE Minsk group showed its inefficiency in solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “It has been 30 years since the Minsk group was formed, but it has not been able to find a long-term solution to the problem. This group has shown its inefficiency”, as quoted by the press service of the Iranian Embassy in Moscow.

As Abbas Araghchi noted, “some countries of this group are not in the region at all and have nothing to do with the crisis”. “Inefficiency of this group has been proven in practice”, he added.

The Deputy Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran went on a mission as a special envoy to promote Tehran’s initiative to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis. He arrived in Moscow after his visit to Baku. Araghchi also intends to visit Erevan and Ankara.
