Iran aims to reduce tensions with the United States and European countries but expects reciprocal actions, such as lifting sanctions and restoring the nuclear deal, according to Abbas Araghchi, Iran's newly appointed Foreign Minister.
In his first interview with foreign media since his official appointment on August 21, Araghchi told Kyodo news agency, “In my speech before parliament, I emphasized that it is crucial to achieve the lifting of sanctions, especially unilateral sanctions, through serious, focused, and time-limited negotiations while respecting the country's fundamental principles.”
Araghchi stated that under his leadership, the Iranian foreign ministry will pursue a reduction of tensions with Washington and the restoration of ties with Europe. However, this will only happen if the Western countries abandon their “hostile approach” towards Tehran, work to renew the nuclear deal, and lift sanctions.
Araghchi, who previously served as Iran's ambassador to Japan from 2008 to 2011, also expressed a desire to strengthen Tehran's ties with Tokyo.
