Iran Sets Lifting of Sanctions as Condition for Talks with US

11 March

Tehran will only engage in negotiations with Washington if US President Donald Trump lifts all American sanctions against Iran. This was stated by Fada Hossein Maleki, a member of Iran’s parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy.

"If Trump truly believes in negotiations, the first step should be the complete removal of the harsh sanctions. Only then can talks proceed, taking into account our national interests. As per the decision of Supreme Leader [Ayatollah Ali Khamenei], we will sit at the negotiating table when we are certain that our national interests are safeguarded," Maleki told Defa Press.

On March 7, Trump announced that he had sent a message to Khamenei proposing negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program. However, the Iranian leader dismissed the offer, stating that Iran would not engage in talks with the US, as Washington is only concerned with its own interests.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Moscow has expressed willingness to help facilitate negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia sees potential for a peaceful resolution regarding Iran’s nuclear program, which has been a major concern for the US.

On February 4, Trump signed an executive order reintroducing Washington’s "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran. The policy includes intensified efforts to curb Iranian oil exports. At the same time, Trump has expressed interest in securing a "great deal" with Tehran and has even suggested the possibility of meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
