Iran to impose counter-sanctions in response to latest EU decision

21 February 2023

Iranian authorities will impose their sanctions in response to the restrictive measures taken by the European Union against Tehran. The republic's foreign ministry announced this on Tuesday.

"Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani reacted to the latest EU sanctions against some Iranians and Iranian companies. Kanani said that the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon announce a list of counter-sanctions in response to the union's latest bans," the text, posted on the ministry's Twitter page, reads.

On Monday, the EU Council introduced new sanctions against Iran over alleged human rights violations in the country, blacklisting 32 more individuals and two entities.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said February 15 that the community also intends to introduce a separate block of sanctions against the Islamic republic on February 24 as part of the 10th package of anti-Russian restrictive measures. It will include legal entities and individuals who, in the opinion of the EU, are related to Iranian military supplies to Russia.
