Iran Urges Syria’s New Authorities to Punish Those Responsible for Civilian Killings in Latakia

11 March

Iran has called on Syria’s transitional government to hold those responsible for the killing of civilians in the country’s coastal provinces accountable. This was stated by Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani, the special representative of Iran’s foreign minister for Syrian affairs.

"The scale of violence and the killing of innocent people in Syria’s coastal provinces is shocking. We condemn the murder of innocent people, including members of various minority communities in Syrian society. Those responsible for these crimes must be brought to justice," Sheibani wrote on X.

"The people of the [Middle East] region and the international community expect decisive action from Syria’s interim government to end the violence, prosecute, and punish those responsible," the diplomat added.

Sheibani emphasized that "Iran has always supported Syria’s stability, peace, and territorial integrity." He warned that Israel, along with "terrorist and extremist groups," could exploit Syria’s instability, posing a broader threat to regional peace.

On March 6, clashes erupted in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, and Homs between the security forces of Syria’s transitional government and local armed groups. The most intense fighting occurred in Jableh, a city home to the Alawite minority, the same group to which Assad’s family belongs.

In response, the new authorities deployed army units and armored vehicles to these provinces, imposing a curfew in major cities. According to the latest reports, 250 armed Alawite fighters have been killed since the escalation began in western Syria, while government security forces have lost 231 personnel. Civilian casualties have exceeded 900, with most victims also belonging to the Alawite community.
