During a briefing with journalists on Tuesday, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali expressed the critical need to develop and strengthen cultural relations between the two countries. Specifically, he advocated for increased cultural interaction through joint exhibitions, art exchanges, and joint film and series productions on historical themes. The ambassador noted that such endeavors could increase understanding of each other's cultures, which is crucial to strengthening bilateral relations.
As part of his visit, Jalali also attended the screening of a documentary titled "Sea of Kindness," which explores the relationship between Russia's Astrakhan region and Iran's Gilan province. The film highlights the regions' deep historical, economic, and cultural ties. Additionally, a photo exhibition featuring the works of amateur and independent photographers who toured Gilan's ports was showcased at the Astrakhan Museum of Local Lore.
The Astrakhan region and Gilan province play a crucial role in the international North-South transport corridor, which makes their collaboration in transportation and trade essential. The regions have significant intersections in history, culture, and education. For instance, Astrakhan State University established direct ties with universities in the northern provinces of Iran in 2002-2003, leading to the implementation of student and teacher exchange programs. Moreover, in 2016, a monument to Persian poet and philosopher Omar Khayyam was erected in Astrakhan, funded by the Chamber of Industry, Trade, Mines, and Agriculture of Gilan province.
