Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, during a meeting with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, thanked the Russian side for supporting Tehran's accession to the Shanghai cooperation organization (SCO), the Iranian diplomat wrote on Twitter on Friday.
"On the sidelines of the SCO summit, I chatted with Lavrov and thanked him and [Russian president] Vladimir Putin for supporting the idea of Iran joining the SCO," he said.
On Friday, participants of the SCO summit, held in Dushanbe, signed a document on cooperation to begin the process of Iran's admission into the organization. Earlier, Putin said at the SCO summit that Russia supports the start of Iran's admission to the organization.
The declaration on the creation of the SCO was signed in Shanghai in June 2001 by six states - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In 2017, India and Pakistan became full members of the SCO. Four observer countries (Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia) and six dialogue partners (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey) also participate in the association.
