Abbas Araghchi, a candidate for Iran's Foreign Minister, has stated that reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program is no longer possible. Instead, he suggests that the focus should shift to addressing Western sanctions, Mohsen Fathi, Deputy Head of the Iranian Parliament’s Social Affairs Committee, said following his meeting with Araghchi.
"The JCPOA can no longer be revived. Our government's goal is not to reinstate the JCPOA but to remove sanctions," Fathi quoted Araghchi as saying.
The JCPOA, signed in 2015 by the UN Security Council's permanent members and Germany with Iran, aimed to address concerns over Iran's nuclear program. However, in 2018, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement, leading to the reimposition of sanctions on Iran. Since April 2021, negotiations involving Russia, China, the US, the UK, Germany, and France to restore the JCPOA have failed, with talks ending in 2022.
Although Araghchi had previously expressed openness to discussing the JCPOA’s revival, he did not outline any specific conditions for renewing the agreement.
