Iranian MFA: new US sanctions contradict its statements about returning to nuclear deal

31 March 2022

The adoption of new US sanctions against Iran contradicts the US side's statements of intent to go back on the nuclear deal, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Thursday.

"Despite the fact that the US says it is ready to return to full implementation of the nuclear deal, it continues to violate UN Security Council Resolution 2231 [in support of the nuclear deal]," the ministry's press service quoted him as saying.

According to the diplomat, "these actions clearly show that the current administration [of the president] of the United States, contrary to its statements, is using every opportunity to increase pressure on the Iranian people without any grounds."

On Wednesday, the US Treasury Department announced the imposition of sanctions on one additional individual and four entities in Iran. The restrictions were imposed under US laws on the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear developments by the permanent five of the UN Security Council and Germany (the five plus one group). Previous US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from this arrangement. The current head of the US administration, Joe Biden, has repeatedly signaled a willingness to bring the US back into the nuclear deal with Tehran. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna to restore the JCPOA to its original form since last April.
