Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in Cairo to participate in the summit of the Developing 8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D8), which includes Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, and Nigeria. This visit marks the first trip by an Iranian president to Cairo in 11 years.
Speaking to Sada al-Balad, President Pezeshkian stated, “Islamic countries must put aside their differences and foster cooperation.” He noted that summit participants plan to discuss the situations in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria.
The summit, which begins on December 19, is focused on the theme: “Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises Shaping Tomorrow's Economy.” A preparatory meeting of foreign ministry representatives from D-8 member states was held in Cairo ahead of the event.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to attend the summit, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will participate as a guest.
Developing-8 was established in 1997 in Istanbul, initiated by Turkey's then-Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan (1996–1997).
