Iran is advising the incoming US administration to adopt a policy of wisdom rather than pressure regarding Tehran, warning that otherwise, the United States will once again drive the Islamic Republic to accelerate its nuclear development. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi shared this perspective in a statement.
"The 'maximum pressure' policy 1.0 met with 'maximum resistance' and ended in 'maximum defeat' for the US," Araghchi stated on social media platform X. "As proof, just compare Iran's peaceful nuclear program before and after the so-called maximum pressure campaign. Attempting 'maximum pressure' 2.0 will only lead to 'maximum defeat' 2.0. Here’s a better idea—try 'maximum wisdom.' It’s in everyone’s interest."
On November 11, US Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, whom Trump may appoint as the US ambassador to the UN, declared that Washington would continue the maximum pressure strategy against Iran if Trump returns to the White House in January 2025.
A day later, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani urged the Trump administration to reconsider plans to revive hostile policies toward Iran. She noted that Tehran is preparing various economic responses to potential new US sanctions.
During his first term as president in 2018, Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and reinstated sanctions, severely impacting Iran’s economy. In 2020, he ordered the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani at Baghdad Airport. Soleimani’s death triggered a new wave of US-Iran tensions, with Iran responding five days later by striking two US military sites in Iraq.
