Iran's Foreign Minister will give Putin a message from Rouhani

21 July 2020

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is sending a message from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, according to Iran's Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in Moscow on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said earlier.

"In addition to sending a message from Rouhani to Vladimir Putin, he (Zarif) will also hold talks with his Russian counterpart (Sergey Lavrov) on the nuclear deal signed five years ago, the development of the situation in the region and bilateral relations," the Ambassador said in a statement published on the Embassy's website.

In July 2015, Iran and the "six" international negotiators reached an agreement on the settlement of the long-standing problem of the Iranian atom. Months of negotiations concluded with the adoption of a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is completely removed from Iran's previously imposed economic and financial sanctions by the UN Security Council, US and EU.

The United States in 2018 unilaterally withdrew from the deal with Iran on the nuclear program and re-imposed sanctions against Tehran, including secondary ones, that is, against other countries doing business with Iran.

Tehran is interested in new Russian weapons

Tehran is interested in purchasing the latest Russian weapons, and Moscow is a priority partner in the military-industrial complex, Iran's Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said on Monday.

"Naturally, this is so," he said in an interview with Kommersant, when asked whether Iran was interested in acquiring new weapons from Russia.

"We will consult with Russia on what we need to strengthen our defense capability. The Russian government and the Russian people have been and remain close to us in difficult times. In this regard, Russia is a priority partner for us ... Russia has great opportunities in this area, and we hope that our ties in this area will only grow stronger over time, " Jalali said.
