Iran's Foreign Ministry open to prisoner swap with US

24 July 2023

Iran's Foreign Ministry has expressed its readiness for a potential prisoner exchange with the United States, stating that the process depends on the willingness of the US government. Nasser Kanani, the spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry, conveyed this message on Monday during a press conference in Tehran.

"Iran is serious about a prisoner exchange with the US, and the delay in the process was primarily due to the lack of will on the part of the US government. However, we have now reached a stage where we can say that this exchange is possible if there is political will on the American side," Kanani stated, as quoted by the Fars news agency. He expressed hope that the exchange would happen soon.

Kanani also mentioned that some countries, which maintain positive relations with both Tehran and Washington, "play a role in facilitating this process." However, he did not specify which specific states he was referring to.

Earlier, on June 13, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri held a meeting in Abu Dhabi with counterparts from Britain, Germany and France to discuss "mutual concerns." Subsequently, The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration of US President Joe Biden had secretly resumed talks with Tehran, aiming to reduce the risk of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons and to potentially reach a prisoner exchange agreement.
