Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei believes that fighters from the Palestinian movement Hamas have delivered a "permanent defeat" to Israel militarily.
"In this instance, on the 15th day of the month of Mehr (October 7 - TASS), the Zionist occupation regime (referring to Israel - TASS) experienced an irreversible defeat, both in terms of military and intelligence," he stated, as reported by the Tasnim news agency. Khamenei emphasized that many had deemed such a defeat impossible and underscored that Hamas's actions had eroded "certain underpinnings of the occupation regime's sovereignty, which will prove challenging to reinstate."
The Wall Street Journal previously published a report claiming that Iran played a role in assisting Hamas in planning the attack on Israel, with approval for its execution granted during a meeting in Beirut on October 2. This information was attributed to high-ranking sources within the Hamas and Hezbollah movements, and was further corroborated by an unnamed European official and an advisor to the Syrian government. However, Iran's permanent mission to the UN countered these claims by asserting that the Palestinian resistance makes independent decisions.
On October 9, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani responded to threats against Tehran in light of its alleged support for the Palestinian Hamas movement during the attack on Israel. He stated that the Islamic republic would retaliate against any actions taken against it in connection with the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
