Iraq sends humanitarian aid to Syrian residents affected by earthquake

The Iraqi government on Wednesday sent humanitarian aid to people in Syria who have been hit by a powerful earthquake. According to Alsumaria, the convoy of trucks with food and other essential goods left Iraq for Syria on Wednesday morning.


The day before, the office of the Prime Minister of Iraq announced the opening of an air bridge to deliver humanitarian aid to Syria and Turkey after the catastrophic earthquake struck these countries. This primarily involves deliveries of medicine and medical supplies, tents and fuel.


On Tuesday, the Iraqi oil ministry sent a convoy with 28 tanks of fuel to Syria as aid in dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake. Earlier Tuesday, two Iraqi planes landed in Damascus with humanitarian aid totaling about 140 tons.


A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit Kahramanmaras province in southeastern Turkey on Monday. After a while, powerful aftershocks were registered. According to the latest data, over 5.8 thousand people were killed and more than 20 thousand wounded in Turkey.


In Syria, the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Tartus and Hama, located in the west and north-west of the country, suffered the most of the disaster. According to the Syrian health ministry, 1.250 people were killed and more than 1.4 thousand wounded.
