Iraqi Foreign Minister Urges Ceasefire to Halt Attacks on US Military Bases

11 January

In a recent interview with Al Hadath TV channel, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire to curb the ongoing attacks on US military bases in Iraq by armed Shiite formations. He expressed concern over the escalating situation, labeling recent events as "unacceptable" due to the cycle of attacks initiated by Shiite groups and countered by US forces.

Hussein underscored the importance of both sides taking responsibility to address and suppress these attacks, emphasizing the Iraqi government's commitment to maintaining calm in the region. "Attacks must be dealt with by both sides," he stated firmly.

Addressing the potential withdrawal of the US-led international coalition from Iraq, the foreign minister emphasized that Iraq's decision hinges on its own assessment of the need for US troop presence. He clarified that while Iraq is keen on determining its own path, it also strives to avoid disrupting relations with Washington. "Before initiating negotiations on the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, internal conditions must be established," he explained. The outcome of these negotiations will then shape the decision regarding the withdrawal or its schedule.

Hussein disclosed that past negotiations had taken place, involving a delegation of military and security forces from Iraq visiting Washington a few months ago. Although the negotiation process had temporarily stalled, dialogue continues, and the foreign minister assured that a new round of talks would be announced soon.

US military spokesman Patrick S. Ryder reported on Tuesday that there have been 127 attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria since October 17, 2023. Out of these, 52 attacks targeted US bases in Iraq, while 75 occurred in Syria.

In a separate development, Shiite militias issued a warning to the US through their Telegram channel, indicating their intention to escalate armed operations in Syria and Iraq. Their statement cited Washington's military aid to the Israeli army, accusing it of causing civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip and South Lebanon.
