Iraqi Ministry of Health discussed with Russian side the treatment of COVID-19 patients

The Iraqi Ministry of Health held a videoconference with Russian colleagues, the parties discussed the protocols for the treatment of the coronavirus infection and further measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic, the Iraqi Ministry of Health said on Facebook.


"Minister of Health and Environment Hassan Mohammed al-Tamimi held an extended meeting with the Russian Ministry of Health on Wednesday in the presence of the Iraqi Ambassador to Russia," the statement said. During a closed videoconference, the parties discussed "treatment protocols for coronavirus-infected patients, as well as plans to combat the epidemic".


Earlier Wednesday, Iraqi news agency INA reported with reference to Riyadh Abd al-Amir, Director-General of the country's public health department, that Baghdad requested information on studies confirming the effectiveness of the drug developed in Russia against the virus COVID-19. "We asked the Russian side to send the drug trials in writing to the advisory commission," he said. Abd al-Amir said the decision on the use of the drug has not been made yet, it would be possible only after the commission's approval.


In early June, the agency already reported that the Iraqi Ministry of Health asked Moscow to provide detailed information on the developed in Russia "Avifavir" medicine in order to study it and determine its effectiveness.


To date, nearly 23,000 cases of the coronavirus infection have been registered in Iraq, including 9,862 recoveries and 712 fatal cases. There are 148 patients in the intensive care unit.
