A significant amount of weaponry previously held by the Syrian army has fallen into the hands of ISIS (IS, banned in Russia) militants, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani told Al Arabiya.
“ISIS has seized a substantial quantity of Syrian military equipment,” Al-Sudani stated, emphasizing Iraq’s commitment to preventing the infiltration of weapons and armed groups from Syria into Iraqi territory. The prime minister expressed hope for collaboration with Syria's new government to secure their shared border.
Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s respect for the Syrian people’s decisions and expressed hope for the initiation of an inclusive political process in Syria. He underscored that Iraq would refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of its neighboring country.
In late November, opposition forces launched a large-scale offensive against Syrian government positions, culminating in their entry into Damascus on December 8. This led to the resignation and departure of President Bashar al-Assad. On December 10, Mohammed Al-Bashir, former leader of the Salvation Government in Idlib province, announced his appointment as the head of Syria's transitional cabinet, which will operate until March 1, 2025.
Meanwhile, Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), reported on December 6 an uptick in ISIS activity in various regions of Syria, following recent political upheavals.
