Iraqi President praises Russian support in fighting terrorism

Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid praised Russia's support in the fight against terrorism and its efforts to ensure the Arab republic's security. The head of state made this statement Monday at a meeting in Baghdad with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.


"The president received Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his accompanying delegation. During the meeting, they discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and prospects for cooperation between the two friendly countries, as well as developments in the regional and international arenas," the president's press service reported.

 

 

According to the statement, "the president praised Russia's support for Iraq in its fight against terrorism, as well as its efforts to ensure security."

 

Rashid also touched on "the importance of promoting economic cooperation between the countries, pointing to the need for coordination and consultations on issues of mutual interest in order to strengthen security and stability in the region and the world."

 

For his part, the Russian foreign minister "praised the position of the Iraqi authorities, who call for dialogue to avoid conflicts and give preference to the peaceful resolution of crises," the Iraqi president's press service reported. Lavrov reiterated Russia's support for Iraq and "its serious desire to strengthen relations between the countries, to expand cooperation in the economic and military spheres."

 

Lavrov arrived in Baghdad on Sunday for a two-day working visit. This is the first stop of the Russian foreign minister's regular tour, during which he will also visit Mali, Mauritania and Sudan.
