In a closed session of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, the deputy intelligence commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Al-Quds Force (IRGC) refuted reports about recruiting Iranian intelligence agents to orchestrate the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas's political bureau, in Tehran. Ebrahim Rezaei, the parliamentary commission's official spokesman, provided this update during a regular briefing on the investigation into Haniyeh's death.
"The deputy commander of the Al-Quds Force emphasized that the killing of martyr Haniyeh was not due to any infiltration by agents, and the issue of infiltration is not relevant to this incident," IRNA quoted Rezaei as stating.
"Significant actions are currently underway to confront the Zionist regime (referring to Israel - TASS note), which is in a precarious situation. To date, we have been actively identifying and dismantling the Mossad spy network both domestically and abroad," the deputy security intelligence minister, also present at the meeting, was quoted as saying. Rezaei added that efforts to clarify all details surrounding the death of Hamas's politburo head will continue.
The deputy did not disclose the identities of senior Iranian intelligence officials.
On August 3, The Daily Telegraph reported, citing sources, that Israel's Mossad intelligence agency allegedly hired Iranian security officials to plant explosive devices in a guest house in Tehran where Haniyeh was staying. Additionally, The New York Times reported that Haniyeh might have been killed by a bomb planted in his residence two months prior.
