Islamic Development Bank to finance road reconstruction in southern Tajikistan

10 January 2023

The Islamic Development Bank will support a road reconstruction project in the Khatlon region, southern Tajikistan. This was reported to TASS on Tuesday in the press service of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan.

"The Islamic Development Bank will finance the modernization and rehabilitation of the Guliston-Farkhor-Pyanj-Dusti road running through the Khatlon region of Tajikistan," the ministry said, noting that the agreement was reached at a meeting between Tajikistan's Economic Development and Trade Minister Zavka Zavkizoda and the bank's delegation.

The interlocutor noted that the highway connects these areas with the border areas of Afghanistan, China, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, and therefore its reconstruction is important. "Restoration of road infrastructure will contribute to the development of passenger and freight traffic, cross-border trade, tourism, and will also reduce the cost of goods and products," he explained.

The Guliston-Farkhor-Pianj-Dusti road is 133 kilometers long. A feasibility study for the reconstruction of the highway was developed in 2020. Implementation of the project on the section from Guliston to Farkhor will start in 2023.

A total of five projects in Tajikistan are planned to be implemented in 2023 in the field of road infrastructure. Over the past five years, 13 state investment projects worth more than 5.1 billion TJS (over $500mln) have been implemented in this area and 250 km of roads, 42 bridges, four tunnels and several flyovers were built.
