Israel Expands Military Operations in Gaza

02 April

Israel has escalated its military operation in Gaza, aiming to increase pressure on Hamas and secure the release of hostages still held in the enclave. Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the expansion, urging Gazans to take action against Hamas themselves.

"Operation 'Courage and Sword' is intensifying to dismantle terrorist networks, eliminate their infrastructure, and bring large areas under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control. These zones will be integrated into Israel’s security perimeter," Katz stated in remarks released by the Defense Ministry.

He reaffirmed that the primary objective remains to ramp up pressure on Hamas, particularly after its refusal to release hostages through negotiations. "This morning’s escalation will tighten the noose on Hamas operatives and add to the pressure on Gaza’s population, bringing us closer to our ultimate mission. I call on Gazans to act now—removing Hamas is the only path to ending this war and securing the hostages' return," he added.

The Israeli military resumed operations in Gaza on March 18, launching heavy strikes and effectively ending the ceasefire established in January. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office justified the move, citing Hamas’s alleged rejection of mediation efforts, including proposals from US special envoy Steve Witkoff. The militant group, in turn, blamed Israel and the United States for reigniting hostilities.
