Israeli authorities are ready to announce temporary ceasefires in hostilities if the Palestinian group Hamas releases a significant number of hostages. This information was conveyed by a senior Israeli official to the American newspaper Politico.
The official's statement was in response to remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an interview with ABC TV, where he emphasized that a comprehensive ceasefire is contingent on the release of hostages. Regarding tactical pauses to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, Netanyahu noted that Israel would consider these on a case-by-case basis. In practice, such temporary ceasefires have already been coordinated. Additionally, US President Joe Biden discussed the possibility of these tactical pauses during a phone conversation with Netanyahu.
"Israel is ready to declare temporary ceasefires, but only if a significant number of hostages are released. We are in discussions with the US administration to find tailored solutions based on specific requirements," the Politico source explained.
Another official stated to the publication that "Netanyahu's willingness to consider US requests for temporary ceasefires is far more constructive than outright rejection."
During a November 6 online briefing, John Kirby, the White House's Strategic Communications Coordinator for the National Security Council, discussed the potential pause in military operations in the Gaza Strip for humanitarian reasons but admitted that there are no specific details available at this time.
