Jordan and Russia. On the 58th anniversary of relations

Al Anbat. A few days ago the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan celebrated the 58th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations with the former Soviet Union, which the current Russian Federation inherited from it.

The strong bilateral relations between Amman and Moscow since their diplomatic foundation on August 21, 1963, have always had a high level of cooperation and coordination in various issues, which allows both countries to look forward to continued cooperation in the future.

Experience has confirmed that Russia and Jordan have many common denominators that unite them. The first of them is respect for state sovereignty, the unity of each country's national territory and their participation in all historical events. Cooperation on all kinds of aspects between Amman and Moscow is reflected in serious and fruitful work on various fronts.

The ties that historically go back to the Arab-Russian Silk Road, known in all spheres of the Russian and Arab worlds are called Arbat, which means the connection between our peoples, which has only grown stronger throughout history and in various stages.

The official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Affairs of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan states that the relations between the two countries have always "been built on the basis of strong friendship, cooperation and mutual respect". And "these relations were significantly strengthened during the reign of the late King Hussein bin Talal and the Soviet leaders".

Over the past decades, ties have been strengthened during the reign of His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn al-Hussein on various fronts: political, economic, military and cultural. Meetings between His Majesty and Russian President Vladimir Putin have taken place on a regular basis, which has given them momentum, strength and trust, facilitating cooperation and coordination to achieve political solutions to conflicts in the region based on the principles of peace, security and development. Jordan affirms that it has historical ties with the Russian Federation based on a strategic partnership and the importance of the role played by Russia in preserving the foundations of peace and stability in the region and finding peaceful solutions to various problems. Jordan has always welcomed Russia's positive and active role in resolving conflicts in the Middle East, particularly the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Russia believes that the resolution of the Palestinian problem should be based on the principles of international legitimacy.

In recent years, Moscow has been increasingly engaged in the problems of the Middle East region, including the Syrian crisis, the fight against the terrorist organization ISIS and its allies, and often mediates agreements on de-escalation zones, which has led to a significant reduction in violence in many Syrian regions.

His Majesty King Abdullah II's visit to Moscow in the second half of August 2021 coincided with the 58th anniversary of the beginning of official relations between the two countries. The meeting confirmed the desire of the two leaders Vladimir Putin and His Majesty King Abdullah II to continue strengthening ties between the two states in many aspects. The two states are linked by a number of agreements in various spheres. The joint Russian-Jordanian intergovernmental commission continues its work, which aims to establish cooperation in areas such as agriculture, tourism, transport and energy.

The initiative of His Majesty King Abdullah II to give Russia a plot of land in the area Al-Maghtas where Jesus Christ was baptized, led to the construction of the Russian Orthodox Church, which belongs to the Patriarchate of Moscow and All Russia. The construction of the temple and the house of hospitality contributed to an increase in the number of Christian pilgrims seeking to visit this unique historical and religious site.

Russian-Jordanian relations, based on the belief of the leaders of the two countries in their importance and the strong ties of friendship between the two peoples, will remain the guarantor of security, development and stability in the region and the world.
