The Jordanian MFA issued a statement on Monday condemning the attack by Israeli security forces on participants at a funeral in East Jerusalem.
A foreign ministry statement relayed by Petra stressed that Israeli policemen invaded a Muslim cemetery and used batons to disperse Arabs who were burying one of the murdered demonstrators. "Israel, which is an occupying power, should respect its obligations under international humanitarian law," the statement said.
The kingdom's foreign ministry considers the invasion of the cemetery by Israeli security forces to be totally unacceptable and notes that dozens of people have suffered from their violent actions. "Jordan demands that the Israeli authorities stop provocations and violations of Palestinian rights," the statement stressed.
Earlier, the Petra news agency reported, citing data from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, that more than 70 participants in the funeral required medical treatment, 13 of whom were taken to hospitals. Israeli police detained 16 people.
On 13 May, Israeli security forces used rubber truncheons to disperse the funeral of Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, in East Jerusalem. She was fatally wounded while covering a May 11 army raid at the Jenin refugee camp, during which clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians broke out.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held Israeli authorities responsible for the crime. He said that the Palestinians would refer the case to the International Criminal Court. On May 13, the UN Security Council condemned the murder of the journalist.
