Kabulov told about the risk of a new escalation in Afghanistan

09 September 2019

After the US President Donald Trump announced the termination of peace talks with the radical Taliban movement (outlawed in Russia), there is a risk of a new aggravation of the situation in Afghanistan.

Presidential Special Representative for Afghanistan, head of the Second Asia Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry Zamir Kabulov told reporters.

"Despite the belligerent tone of statements of both sides, both note the readiness to continue the dialogue. Since emotions are now extremely heated, within a certain period, hopefully short, the escalation of hostilities may begin. However, we believe that eventually the negotiation process will continue and will be completed successfully", -   TASS quotes the diplomat.

Trump announced the termination of negotiations with the Taliban and canceled the previously planned meeting with representatives of the organization and the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani after the terrorist attack in Kabul, which killed 12 people, including an American soldier.
