Karasin: Russian presidency in EEU should be used to strengthen its potential

06 December 2022

Russia will chair the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) in 2023, and this period should be used to expand ties with other states and maximize its potential. Grigory Karasin, head of the Federation Council's Foreign Affairs Committee, said this on Tuesday.

"2023 will be the year of Russia's presidency in the Eurasian Economic Union. This period should be used to maximize the potential of the EEU and expand its ties with other states," the senator said, speaking at a section of the VIII " Primakov Readings" International Forum.

Karasin stressed that Russia will continue dialogue on cooperation with all allies and partners within the EEU, CSTO, CIS, SCO, BRICS and other formats in order to strengthen the multipolar world. "The vast majority of states in the Eurasian regions (India, China, the APAC, the Arab world), as well as countries in Africa and Latin America, have refused to join the illegal anti-Russian sanctions. This is a reality that clearly frightens the Western world. It is clear that the strengthening and developing partnerships with our friends and neighbors on the Eurasian continent is of particular importance," said the parliamentarian, speaking at a session devoted to cooperation in Eurasia against the backdrop of the crisis of globalization.

The senator stressed that it is important to develop interaction within the SCO framework, as last year showed that the member states of this organization "are capable of defending their sovereignty in the face of frontal pressure." "The SCO is becoming one of the poles of the emerging multipolar world. Iran's desire to join the organization and Turkish President [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan's statement about his country's desire to also become a member of this organization attest to this," Karasin said.

According to him, strengthening integration cooperation with Belarus within the framework of the Union State is a special priority. "The Federation Council is working hard to develop Russia's cooperation with the states of Central Asia. <...> We can overcome the crisis only together," stressed the head of the Federation Council Committee.

He added that for several decades "the West has been aggressively and cynically engaged in turning Ukraine into a NATO military springboard hostile to Russia, declaring war on everything Russian." "Unfortunately for Europe and the whole world, this scheme has succeeded," Karasin stated.
