Kazakhstan Confirms Meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers in Almaty

06 May

Kazakhstan's authorities have confirmed the convening of a meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, respectively, in Almaty on May 10, 2024. This announcement was made by Aybek Smadiyarov, the official representative of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry.

"Following prior agreements, discussions between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia will take place in Almaty on May 10, 2024," Smadiyarov stated during a briefing. Responding to a question from TASS, he clarified, "The negotiations themselves will be held behind closed doors, with the press invited to the opening of the meeting."

Earlier, the Armenian Foreign Ministry had confirmed the upcoming talks in Kazakhstan on May 10.

On April 29, Smadiyarov had stated that Kazakhstan does not intend to mediate the talks, emphasizing that the meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers in Almaty would be conducted solely between the two sides.

During recent visits to Azerbaijan and Armenia, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underscored the significance of establishing a lasting, long-term peace between the two countries. Tokayev also expressed Kazakhstan's readiness to facilitate negotiations by providing a platform for dialogue between Baku and Yerevan.
