King of Jordan says Russia has always been an element of stability in the region

23 August 2021

Russia has always been an element of stability in the region, King Abdullah II of Jordan said on Monday at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the margins of the Army-2021 forum.

"We are watching your role and Russia's role, which has always been an element of stability in our region, where there are certain challenges. Our bilateral relations continue to evolve. I think on the way out of the pandemic, we will have many different opportunities in different areas, in agriculture, in mining," he said.

The king added that during his current visit to Russia, he is "exploring possibilities of cooperation in the production of vaccines [against the coronavirus] in the near future," and thanked Putin for helping Jordan obtain Sputnik V vaccines and giving the kingdom the ability to fight the virus.

Speaking about the situation in the region, Abdullah II noted that Russia "has played the most stabilizing role in Syria," allowing the peace process to move forward. He also noted Russia's "historic role" in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which enabled "Israelis and Palestinians to begin discussing issues with each other."

"We have always fought extremism. Now with the pandemic, and in light of events in Afghanistan, I think we need to re-coordinate our efforts to continue this fight," the Jordanian monarch said.

The Army-2021 International Military-Technical Forum is taking place at the Patriot Congress and Exhibition Center from August 22 to 28.
